RUST Hunter Missions Guide (Quests, Locations, Rewards)

The Hunter is a quest NPC found at the Ranch monument. You’ll recognize the Hunter NPC by the bone helmet he wears and he’ll be holding a compound bow. The Hunter’s missions are kill quests–go out, kill a specific animal, come back and claim your reward! But the treasure hunt mission works in reverse–you pay the Hunter a bit of scrap for the location of some pretty good loot!

Since you’ll be dispatching animals, you will want to have a hunting weapon or two. If you completed the Lumberjack missions first, you’ll have a Crossbow and a Hatchet will be helpful in harvesting your kills as well as cutting wood for more arrows.

The RUST Hunter missions are intended for solo players and can be repeated after a 60-minute lockout timer.

The Hunter: Boar Hunt Mission

The Hunter says, “Howdy!”

You have two options for a response:

1. Yeah?
2. I’m not interested in talking to you

Choose “Yeah?”

The Hunter says, “Which would you like to attempt?”

You have three options for a response:

1. Boar Hunt
2. Deer Hunt
3. Treasure

Choose “Boar Hunt”

The Hunter says, “I really hate boars, Will you do me  a favor and kill one for me? I’ll pay you 25 scrap if you do.”

You have two options for a response:

1. Okay I’ll do it!
2. Uh.. I’m good.

Choose “Okay I’ll do it!”

The Hunter says, “Okay! come back to me when you have completed the mission!”

You have one option for a response:

1. Okay! come back to me when you have completed the mission! (Note that this text is a bug)

The Hunter will grant you the mission and an objective checklist will appear in the top left of your screen.

Note: The NPC text currently reads that you will be paid 25 scrap for completing this mission. This is a bug, it should say 100 scrap to match the reward amount indicated in the mission UI screen.

Boar Mission Walkthrough

To complete this mission, you’ll want to have a ranged weapon handy. A hunting bow and wooden arrows should be fine, and if you’ve already completed the Lumberjack’s missions, you should already have a crossbow. Once you’ve got your hunting gear, head away from the Ranch to get out of the safe zone. The amount of time it’ll take to find a boar will vary depending on the location of the ranch on your server and the number of players, so don’t give up.

Once you’ve tracked one down and killed it, your mission objective will update. You can harvest the boar if you wish, but it is not required to complete the mission. Return to the Hunter to update your mission objectives and complete the mission to claim your reward.

Upon completing the Boar Hunt mission, you will receive the following:

The Hunter: Deer Hunt Mission

The Hunter says, “Howdy!”

You have two options for a response:

1. Yeah?
2. I’m not interested in talking to you

The Hunter says, “Which would you like to attempt?”

You have three options for a response:

1. Boar Hunt
2. Deer Hunt
3. Treasure

Choose “Boar Hunt”

The Hunter says, “Deer are simply the worst. If you kill 3 deer I will reward you with 100 scrap, What do you say?”

You have two options for a response:

1. Okay I’ll try.
2. Uh.. I’m good.

Choose “Okay I’ll try.”

The Hunter says, “Okay! come back to me when you have completed the mission!”

You have one option for a response:

1. Okay! come back to me when you have completed the mission! (Note that this text is a bug)

Deer Hunt Mission Objectives

• Find and kill a boar

Deer Mission Walkthrough

To complete this mission, you’ll want to have a ranged weapon because deer are irritatingly fast. A hunting bow and wooden arrows should be plenty, and if you’ve already completed the Lumberjack’s missions, you should already have a crossbow. Once you’ve got your hunting gear, head away from the Ranch to get out of the safe zone. The further away the better, as the animals always seem to run straight at the safe zone once you spook them.

Once you’ve tracked down a deer and killed it, your mission objective will update. You can harvest the deer if you wish, but it is not required to complete the mission. Return to the Hunter to update your mission objectives and complete the mission to claim your reward.

Deer Hunt Mission Rewards

The Hunter: Vagabond Treasure Mission

The Hunter says, “Howdy!”

You have two options for a response:

1. Yeah?
2. I’m not interested in talking to you

Choose “Yeah?”

The Hunter says, “Which would you like to attempt?”

You have three options for a response:

1. Boar Hunt
2. Deer Hunt
3. Treasure

Choose “Treasure”

The Hunter says, “I know where you can find some hidden treasure, but the location will cost you 25 scrap. I promise it’ll be worth it, though”

You have multiple options for a response based on whether or not you have 25 scrap in your inventory.

If you don’t have the scrap, you will see:

1. I can’t afford that.
2. No thanks

If you do have the scrap, you will see:

1. Okay [PAY 25 SCRAP]
2. No thanks.

Choose “Okay [PAY 25 SCRAP]”

The Hunter says, “Okay! no need to come back, enjoy your loot!”

You have one option for a response:

1. [EXIT]

The Hunter will grant you the mission and an objective checklist will appear in the top left of your screen and a location indicator will be placed on your map. Press the G key to open the map. You’ll be looking for a blue icon with a white scroll.

The treasure will be inside of a container, such as a tool chest. Here’s an example of a randomized location and the loot contained.

Vagabond Treasure Mission Objectives

Vagabond Treasure Mission Walkthrough

The treasure hunt location will be marked on your map via the blue waypoint marker. Make your way to the waypoint marker and keep an eye out for a red toolbox container. You will know you’ve found the right toolbox when your quest objective updates and the mission will autocomplete itself. Additionally, your SteamID will be whitelisted to the container, so you needn’t worry about other players stumbling upon your loot.

Upon completion, a sound will play and a message will appear across the screen informing you that you’ve completed the mission and the mission objective list will disappear from the top left of your screen. There’s no need to return to the Hunter to complete this mission.

Vagabond Mission Rewards

The loot for this mission is randomized, however, one EXAMPLE set of loot found was:

• 1x Targeting Computer
• 2x Tech Trash
• 24x High-Quality Metal
• 1x Large Furnace
• 1x Semi-Automatic Rifle
• 5x Scrap
