Sons Of The Forest: How to Get and Use the Putter

Looking to locate the Putter in Sons Of The Forest?

The Putter in Sons of the Forest allows players to get together and face off in the brutal test of skill and patience known as golf. Surprisingly, but perhaps realistically, the Putter makes for an inferior weapon against any targets that aren’t golf balls.

Accurately named, this golf club was designed for control in mind rather than power or distance. Of course, that won’t stop you from swinging it like it’s a driver.

Let’s discover how to locate this must-have item and add it to your arsenal.

How to get the Putter in Sons Of The Forest

Putters can be found in two locations: the Golf Course and the Residential Bunker. On the golf course, putters can easily be found near golf carts and occasionally on the ground near marker flags. A single putter can be found inside the residential bunker lying on a desk inside one of the apartments. The entrance to the bunker is locked and requires the Guest Keycard or VIP Keycard to open.

Tips and tricks for using the Putter

Playing golf will require a golf ball or some other round object to use as a substitute, such as a small stone or severed head. With the Putter equipped, pressing the attack button (default Mouse 1) while looking at the ground will cause the player to perform a short swing with the club. Holding down the attack button while looking down will perform a driving swing. Both of these swings can strike golf balls or other loose objects and send them rolling in the direction of the swing.

If you enjoy playing golf, consider building your course. Since golf balls trigger traps, a Small Animal Trap makes for an excellent substitute for a proper hole.

While we don’t recommend it, the Putter can also be used as a melee weapon. The Putter swings with decent speed but deals negligible damage and offers a rather pitiful block value. It is possible to perform power attacks and parries with the Putter. Still, its alternate animation for attacking when aiming down can make it difficult to fight low-to-the-ground enemies like cannibal scouts or baby mutants.

How to equip the Putter

Sons Of The Forest — Equipping the Putter

Once you have acquired the Putter, you can equip it by:

  1. Opening your inventory
  2. Panning the mouse to the far right of the crafting mat
  3. Selecting the Putter by left-clicking on it
  4. The inventory will close, and you will have the Putter in hand

How to add the Putter to the quick select bag

Alternatively, if you’ve added the Putter to your backpack, you can access it through the quick-select bag. Briefly hold down the inventory key to pull out the quick-select bag.

This is much faster than panning the inventory screen whenever you want to switch weapons. If you have the Putter on your quick-select bag, you can find it in short or long weapon slots.

The Putter is considered a long weapon but can also be added to the short weapon slot. Both the long and short weapon slots can be found on the left side of the backpack and hold weapons such as the Chainsaw, Compound Bow, Katana, Crossbow, and more.

To add the Putter to the quick-select bag:

  1. Open the inventory screen
  2. Add the backpack to the crafting mat by right-clicking on it
  3. If there is an item in both the long and short weapon slots, right-click on one to remove it
  4. Right-click on the Putter to add it to the quick-select bag

How to assign the Putter to a hotkey

If you want to switch weapons faster and have the Putter in hand with a single keystroke, you can assign it to a hotkey by:

  1. Open the inventory
  2. Mouse over the Putter to the far right of the crafting mat
  3. With your mouse over the weapon, press one of the ten available hotkeys (1-0) to assign it to that key
  4. Now when you press the assigned key, the Putter will automatically be equipped to your hands

FAQs

Do golf swings deal damage?

Yes. Golf swings deal as much damage as their standard counterparts, with short swings counting as quick attacks and drives as heavy attacks.

Can the Putter dismember enemies?

No. Though severed heads make an excellent substitute for golf balls.

Why aren’t golf balls moving when I hit them with the Putter?

Objects that spawn on the ground, such as the golf balls that spawn at the golf course, must be picked up, dropped, or thrown before they can roll.

Can the Putter be dropped or traded?

No. The Putter cannot be dropped or traded with other players.

Final thoughts on the Putter

Sometimes, it’s nice to take a break from building log castles and blowing up mutants to play a round of golf. Whether you are competing with friends or looking to hone your skills alone, the Putter and a ball are the only equipment you need. Plus, sending baby mutants flying with a perfect drive is fun. If we’re lucky, we’ll see future developments from Endnight Games introduce a driver so we can put our skills to the test on the green.
