Sons Of The Forest: How to Craft Molotovs

What is a Molotov, and what’s it used for?

In Sons Of The Forest, Molotovs are throwable incendiary weapons capable of setting groups of enemies on fire. Nearly identical to the Molotov cocktails from The Forest, these firebombs are a staple of cannibal combat.

Not only are Molotovs easy to craft, but the materials used to make them are plentiful and found in multiple locations throughout the map. The splash radius and damage over time offered by these throwables make them extremely effective against groups of cannibals and dangerous mutants.

How to craft Molotovs in Sons Of The Forest

Sons Of The Forest — Crafting Molotov Cocktails

Molotovs require only two materials, which can be sourced from many locations around the island. To craft a Molotov, you will need the following:

  • 1 Vodka Bottle
  • 1 Cloth

Cloth can be found around cannibal villages, near campsites, or inside sealed coffins. Vodka bottles can be sourced from coolers around campsites, near corpses, or inside loot crates at points of interest.

Once you have the necessary components, you can craft a Molotov by:

  1. Opening the inventory (default I key)
  2. Adding the vodka bottle and cloth to the crafting mat by right-clicking on them
  3. Clicking on the gear icon to combine them

How to use Molotovs

Sons Of The Forest — How to Use a Molotov

Molotovs are throwable weapons that rely on fire to deal damage over time. When a Molotov is equipped, a white arc will become visible to indicate the path the Molotov will travel when thrown. Adjust your view until the arc ends where you would like the Molotov to land.

Molotovs must be lit before being thrown to be effective. With a Molotov equipped, hold the light button (default L key) to ignite the wick. If you do not have the lighter equipped, you can do so by clicking on it in the inventory.

After being lit, press the attack button (default left mouse button) to throw the Molotov. On impact, the weapon will explode into a fiery cloud and leave a burning pool on the ground for a short duration. Creatures inside this blast radius or who walk through the flames will catch fire and take damage until extinguished. Enemies killed by this fire will continue to burn until their corpse is reduced to bones.

How to equip the Molotov

Once you’ve crafted a Molotov, you can equip it as your active weapon by:

  1. Opening your inventory
  2. Panning the mouse above and to the right of the crafting mat
  3. Select the Molotov by left-clicking on it
  4. The inventory will close, and you will have the Molotov in hand

How to add the Molotov to the quick select bag

Sons Of The Forest — Adding to Quick-Select Menu

Alternatively, if you’ve added the Molotov to your backpack, you can access it through the quick-select bag. Briefly hold down the inventory key to pull out the quick-select bag.

This is much faster than having to pan through the inventory screen each time you want to switch weapons. If you have the Molotov on your quick-select bag, you can find it in a consumable slot.

The Molotov is considered a consumable and can only be added to the appropriate slots on the backpack. The four consumable slots are located on the bottom row of the backpack and hold items like meds, food items, grenades, and Molotovs.

To add the Molotov to the quick-select bag:

  1. Open the inventory screen
  2. Add the backpack to the crafting mat by right-clicking on it
  3. If there is an item in all four consumable slots, right-click on one of them to remove it
  4. Right-click on the Molotov to add it to the quick-select bag

How to assign the Molotov to a hotkey

If you prefer to have a Molotov in hand with the press of a button, you can assign the Molotov a hotkey in the inventory screen.

  1. Open the inventory
  2. Mouse over the Molotov above and to the right of the crafting mat
  3. With your mouse over the Molotov, press one of the ten available hotkeys (1-0) to assign it to that key
  4. Now when you press the assigned key, the Molotov will automatically be equipped to your hands

Does the Molotov work in water?

Yes and no. The Molotov will still momentarily burn enemies in shallow water, provided the weapon does not land in the water. However, this is extremely inefficient, and we don’t recommend it.

Can Molotovs set foliage or buildings on fire?

No. While the initial blast may disturb small bushes, the fire left behind will not ignite structures or trees.

Can Molotovs damage players?

Yes. Both the detonation and the flames left behind by the Molotov can light players on fire, so be careful where you throw them.

Final thoughts on the Molotov

The Molotov in Endnight Games’ Sons Of The Forest may not seem as powerful as explosives like Time Bombs and grenades, but they can turn a horde of hungry cannibals and mutants into nothing more than a pile of charred bones. Whether defending your base or trying to clear out a cave full of mutants, the Molotov is second to none regarding firepower.
