Looking for the best places to base down in Sons Of The Forest?
One of our favorite parts of The Forest was always building a massive base from the ground up and defending it from the horrible mutants and cannibals that stalked the island. Now that Sons Of The Forest is here, we have that same itch to build all over again, and this time with a new and improved dynamic building system.
Players have all kinds of great ideas for new bases, but with the map as big as it is, it can be daunting to pick out a spot that feels just right. While we can’t promise the perfect spot for every player, we wanted to share some of the best base locations in Sons Of The Forest.

1. The Crown
The Crown is a short peninsula surrounded by a small creek. While the slopes are technically climbable for players, they completely prevent enemies from reaching the area from any direction other than the front. This means you need only build a single wall to protect your entire base.
Moreover, the nearby creek means easy access to water and fish, while a campsite on the next hill provides loot crates and rope. A highly defensible location with easy access to resources of all kinds and a great view of the surrounding area? Sign us up!
2. Waterfall Delta
Just downriver from The Crown is a location we call the Waterfall Delta. This rocky overlook rests right where several major rivers meet, making sending logs downriver for building easy. It also has easy access to water, making its height defensible.
Despite this, its position at the end of a cannibal patrol path and several rivers means you’ll have visitors pretty regularly. Despite this, if you’re looking for somewhere scenic, the views of both the mountains and the beach this location provides make it one of the most attractive locations on our list.
3. Coffin Lake Island
One of the only inland islands on the map, the landmass at the center of what we call Coffin Lake is excellent for new players who need time to get adjusted to the game. This island is only accessible by swimming or zipline, making it completely safe from enemies during warm seasons. The surrounding water makes getting fish and drinking water a breeze.
The real challenge comes when trying to get logs out to the island, as it only has a few trees. Pushing logs out to it while swimming is possible, but we recommend using the Rope Gun to transport logs. Just ensure you have your defenses built by winter because the lake will freeze and leave your base in the middle of an open field.
4. Winter Lake
Right in the middle of the mountains at the island’s center is a broad valley and a frozen lake we call Winter Lake. It may be cold, but this perpetually frozen lake offers multiple locations for great bases of different kinds. The cliffs around the lake are flat enough to offer defensible locations, while tree cover is thick enough to support an entire hanging base.
If you are looking for somewhere a little more secluded, there is a cave just past the waterfall that you can block off with a gate and live inside, as long as you don’t mind sharing your home with skeletons. You won’t find many edible plants around here, but a base in the center of the map is great for providing easy access to every point of interest, especially if you have the Hang Glider.
5. The Golf Course
It may not seem like it, but the golf course on the eastern stretch of the island is actually a great place for building a base. Plenty of trees are nearby, multiple sources of fresh water, and lots of wildlife to hunt for food and hides. But what the golf course provides that most other locations do not is a ton of flat, open space.
The golf course is perfect for those who want to build a huge base and is especially worthwhile for those playing with a group. Cannibals frequent the area, but with enough time, you can have a golf course fortress for you and your friends to defend together. Plus, Putters are lying around everywhere if playing golf interests you.
6. The Docks
If you are looking for somewhere a bit more sunny but still merciless and deadly, look no further than the docks. On the north side of the island, near the entrance to the final bunker are two docks with attached helipads. These docks are only accessible from the front, making it easy to block them off, and can be connected over the water either via bridge or zipline.
This location won’t provide a lot of building space but makes for a great outpost or single-player base. Numerous sea turtles will regularly appear on the shoreline, providing food, while rope and other supplies are plentiful thanks to the loot crates in the back of the nearby golf carts. Just be sure to build some rain catchers, as the nearest stream is a bit of a hike.
BE WARNED that the largest cannibal village on the map is right down the beach from here. Only choose this location if you enjoy conflict and want frequent raids.
7. Abandoned Fishing Village
If you are looking for some pre-built shelters to call your own, check out the abandoned fishing village along the island’s northeast shore. With easy access to both beach and forest, this village has plenty of natural resources and provides a unique opportunity to combine modern and primitive construction.
Not all buildings allow structures to be set down inside them, but there is plenty of room in those that house several players and all of their stuff. Additionally, several bolts for the Crossbow spawn inside one of the buildings, providing a regular supply of ammunition. What happened to the people who lived here is still a mystery, but they’re gone, so you might as well make yourself at home.
