RUST Small Oil Rig Monument Guide

RUST Small Oil Rig Monument

There are two oil rig monuments in RUST, the large oil rig monument and the small oil rig monument. The small oil rig monument was introduced to RUST on March 7th, 2019 in the Oil Rig Update. The oil rig itself appears to have been modeled after a real-life offshore “Jack-Up” oil rig.

Similar to the Military Tunnel and the Cargo Ship monuments, it is protected by armed scientists. In total, there are 15 blue scientists that patrol the various levels. When scientists are killed, they will re-spawn roughly 24 minutes later. This makes it very difficult to loiter about the monument for long, as it will stress test resources. There is no recycler onboard the oilrig, so be prepared to pack out any loot you acquire.

However, unlike the existing cargo ship event, there is no radiation to worry about and the small oil rig does not move, as it is stationary in nature. With each procedural map, there is a chance the small oil rig will spawn in a random location, based on the map’s seed and size values. The larger the map size, the better the chance.

The small oil rig monument will spawn on the outer edges of the map, so look carefully, it can be easy to miss. Accessing the monument itself can be quite challenging, as many players will be vying for control and means to transport themselves to the small oil rig.

Comprised of 4 levels, all above the water, each can be identified by the painted markings found on the jack-ups and surrounding bulkheads. On the uppermost level, players will find a helicopter landing pad.

This helicopter landing pad is also used in conjunction with a new Heavy Scientist event, which can be triggered by players hacking a locked crate on the 4th level. The small oil rig monument offers a unique, challenging and highly lucrative offering for those players interested in risking the trip.

Accessing the Small Oil Rig

Accessing the monument is a non-trivial task. Apart from competing players, the monument is completely isolated from the main island. Players wishing to venture to this monument will want to consider supplying themselves with food, water, medicine, ammunition, keycards, fuses, fuel, and transportation.

While players can technically make the swim, it’s not practical or advised, as the scientist will engage you as players near the monument. Consider securing a motorboat, RHIB, hot air balloon, submarine or the minicopter to travel to and from the small oil rig monument.

It’s also highly advised to venture out to the monument with either a partner or small group. The scientist on board will engage players well before they’ve made contact. There’s also the possibility of other players already on the monument engaging. Keep in mind, the value of your transportation, as others will certainly attempt to sabotage any vehicles they come in contact with.

Players looking to exit the small oil rig can do this quickly by simply jumping off the sides and into the water, as no fall damage will be taken. However, scientists will continue to engage players that are in the water if within shooting distance.

Level 0

Found on Level 0

  • 1 Scientist

On this level, there are no loot containers that spawn.

Level 0 is the lowest level of the small oil rig monument, positioned just above the water. It serves as the primary entry point to the monument for players that choose to swim, rode the rowboat or RHIB, or those that abandoned ship.

There is a docking platform with rubber tires lining its edges. Attached to the docking platform are two wooden ladders that allow players to climb up from within the water. This dock will effectively turn into the proverbial parking lot for all of the boats used to access the monument.

On the docking platform, a single scientist will spawn and patrol the area. The scientist will kill on sight, so be sure to take him out before jumping into the water. An additional scientist will occasionally patrol along the staircase located just above the docking platform. This scientist spawns on Level 1 however and isn’t always visible, so keep an eye out.

From Level 0 there are two access points in which players can move to and from Level 1.

  • The 1st access point and most obvious is located on the docking platform. Directly behind the scientist’s patrol area is a metal ladder leading up to a longer staircase.
  • The 2nd access point is located on the interior of Level 0. There are 2 wooden ladders that have been stacked on a central support beam that leads up into the Level 1 platform.

Level 1

Found on Level 1

  • 2 Scientists
  • Up to 4 Loot Containers

There is the potential for 4 loot containers to spawn. These containers may not appear on each visit but can spawn in overtime. This can include food crates, medical supply crates, standard crates, military crates, standard barrels, and fuel barrels. This is important to note, as players may become stranded on the small oil rig and need to camp specific supplies.

2 scientists will spawn on the Level 1 platform and will typically engage players once they’re on the platform. Occasionally, additional scientists will also make their way down on patrols from levels above. Players can see scientists patrolling through the grates above. The scientists cannot be shot through the floor, but if they are aggravated, they will shoot and chase players down to further levels.

From Level 1 there is one access point in which players can move to and from Level 2.

  • The access point is a metal staircase located under the crane boom, opposite of the helipad, connecting Levels 1 and 2.

Level 2

Found on Level 2

  • 5 Scientists
  • Up to 10 Loot Containers

There is the potential for 10 loot containers to spawn. These containers may not appear on each visit but can spawn in overtime. This can include food crates, medical supply crates, standard crates, military crates, standard barrels, and fuel barrels.

5 scientists will spawn on the Level 2 platform and will typically engage players once they’re on the platform. Occasionally, additional scientists will also make their way onto the platform while patrolling from other levels. Players cannot see other players and scientists patrolling on the floor above, because Level 3’s floor is a solid sheet metal plate. This can make timing the scientist movements a little more difficult before moving up.

From Level 2 there is one access point in which players can move to and from Level 3.

  • The access point is a metal staircase located under the crane boom, opposite of the helipad, connecting Levels 2 and 3.
  • It’s important to note that players can jump down from multiple areas of Level 3 down into Level 2.

Level 3

Found on Level 3

There are 2 scientists that spawn on Level 3 and roamers will occasionally path through while patrolling from Levels 2 and  4.

There is the potential for 7 loot containers to spawn. These items may not appear on each visit but can spawn in overtime. This can include food crates, medical supply crates, standard crates, military crates, standard barrels, and fuel barrels. Also note, 3 of the containers will be locked behind a Green Keycard, inside of a small yellow building located on this level.

From Level 3 there are two access points in which players can move to and from Level 4.

  • The 1st access point is a metal staircase located under the crane boom, opposite of the helipad.
  • The 2nd access point is a metal staircase located under the helipad, opposite of the crane boom.
  • It’s important to note that players can jump down from multiple areas of Level 4 down into Level 3.

Level 4

Found on Level 4

There is the potential for 10 loot containers to spawn on Level 4. These items may not appear on the initial visit but can spawn in overtime. This can include food crates, medical supply crates, standard crates, military crates, code-locked crates, elite crates, standard barrels, and fuel barrels.

There are two small buildings on Level 4, one white office building, located under the helipad, that houses a single elite crate, locked behind a Blue Keycard and Red Keycard reader. The other is a small yellow building, located just beside the white office building and houses two military crates on a shelf.

In the dead center of the Level 4 platform, players can find a code-locked crate, which when initiated will trigger the Heavy Scientist and Chinook Event.

From Level 4 there is one access point in which players can move to and from the helipad.

  • The access point is a metal staircase located under the center of helipad itself.

Heavy Scientist & Chinook Event

On Level 4, centered atop of the small oil rig monument, a locked crate can be found positioned between two stacks of rusted piping. When a player initiates the hacking sequence for this locked crate the following actions will occur:

  • The 15-minute timer will count down
  • Yellow siren lights will begin to light up and spin
  • Loud warning alarms will blare out over the loudspeaker
  • A Chinook (CH47) will circle and  briefly touch down on the helipad within a minute
  • 5 Heavy Scientists will exit the Chinook and it will take off

The heavy scientists are a modified version of the blue scientist NPCs found across the map. They are protected by a layer of heavy armor, resembling EOD (explosive ordinance) outfit. With this additional armor, they have a considerable amount of health.  In comparison, the heavy scientist takes 5 direct headshots before dying, as opposed to the 3 needed to kill a blue scientist.

Once the heavy scientists have exited the Chinook, they will immediately engage all players within sight. Each scientist will move into a defensive position while moving around the platform and will remain until they are killed.

This event will reset once the following are true:

  • All heavy scientists have been killed
  • The locked crate has been fully looted
  • All players have left the monument’s vicinity

One last thing to consider, the small oil rig is part of the Chinook’s patrol path, so keep that in mind if preparing to start the Heavy Scientist event while the Chinook is active.
