Surface RUST: What to Expect in the March 2026 RUST Wipe

It’s safe to say last month’s massive Naval Update made quite the splash. The community has been incredibly busy building Player-Made Boats and exploring the Deep Sea event. Despite a few growing pains and server hiccups right out of the gate, player reception has been positive, and the developers have been swift with numerous mini-patches to smooth out the waters. Now that the foundation is firmly in place, the March 2026 update is just over the horizon.

Rather than a complete content overhaul or massive additions, this March’s update is all about game-changing refinements, highly requested quality-of-life additions, and some excellent new ways to organize your base.

Headlining the March patch is the new Box DLC Pack, which brings 16 incredibly useful categorized skins to the large wooden box, along with major adjustments to the game’s day/night cycle, critical fixes to Scientist armor mitigation, and the exciting new ability to deploy select electrical and IO items directly onto your boats.

We’ve also got some fantastic tweaks to the Deep Sea event, including stationary boat building stations and randomized respawn timers to keep the loot hunt fresh. We’ve spent some time pecking away on the Staging branch to give you a first look at what’s dropping, so let’s dive into everything you need to know before wipe day!

New Box DLC

The days of struggling to both sort and find your belongings at night are over, with the coming of the almighty Box DLC, which comes with a total of 16 skins, all for the Large Wood Box. Some might argue that this will irrevocably damage the Large Wood Box skin market and hurt community artists hoping to peddle their wares to the RUST masses. To this we say, yeah, probably.

The following skin and applicable details are included;

Deep Sea & Boating Changes

1. RHIBs

You might’ve heard, yes, RHIBs will no longer be able to make the trek to and from the Deep Sea event.  They’ve been given the Rowboat treatment. This leaves your options as Player-Made Boats or PT Boats (they still work, I checked).

2. Static Boat Building Stations

Most people don’t even think about it, but what happens if your Player-Made Boat somehow breaks or malfunctions while in the Deep Sea and you can’t make it back to the mainland for repairs or to offload your booty? Introducing, stationary Deep Sea Boat Building Stations, located off each island. You can break barrels for Low Grade Fuel, chop trees for Wood, and pray that’s enough to get you home.

3. Electrical & IO Deployment

The prohibition on deploying electrical, industrial, and hydro equipment on boats has been partially lifted, though a few major restrictions still exist. Yes, this means you can use Electric Furnaces, limited lighting, and even Powered Water Purifiers on your boat.

At this time, overhead lights that would otherwise replace sunlight for planting are not deployable. This is the major item no-use list so far (not 100% inclusive):

4. Cannon Damage Protection & Impact Effect

When players are engaged in combat and are mounted in a Cannon, they now take ~50% less damage from all sources. This is negated the second you dismount. Player-Made Boats that take Cannon damage are temporarily slowed down when struck by one.

5. Player Boat Editing & Decay

Two big things, one that might have already been live, one that definitely wasn’t.  There is now no maximum timer (was 10 minutes) for when a boat piece might be destroyed while being edited. The other, and slightly more important one to some of you streamers, is that if you are using only sails, they are reversible. If you raise a sail, look at it, and press the E key, you can rotate it 180 degrees to back up without an engine.

In addition to editing changes, boat decay is being altered in the following ways;

  • playerboat.decayminutes 1080 720 How long before a boat loses all its health while outside and unmounted
  • playerboat.decaystartdelayminutes 720 1440 How long until decay begins after last boat usage

6. Loot Respawn Changes

Loot respawning is being enabled, if only in part; it won’t necessarily be first-come, first-served anymore.

7. Event Respawn Timer

Before March, the respawn timer after the Deep Sea Event closed was exactly 90 minutes. Afterwards, it is anywhere between 90 minutes and 150 minutes. It also has a subsequent opening sound and no longer spawns precisely after wipe.

8. Location Variation

Yes, it was constantly spawning on the same beach, specific to a single map, for a single wipe.  On Staging, after it despawns (let’s say East Coast), it won’t spawn there again. It should now randomly rotate through the 4 directions, but never hit the same one twice in a row.

9. Scientist Nerf

You weren’t crazy; they really were hitting much too hard. Or rather, someone on the backend didn’t realize that the newly tuned scientist AI wasn’t accounting for proper armor mitigations. Hazmats were only reducing damage by 5% instead of 30%, same with Metal Armor… So if you were getting rolled, you should stand a much better chance now.

Other players will still hurt just as badly. Scientists also now rock either Lasers or Weapon Flashlights.   Scientists can also no longer aimbot through their own deployed smokes. Damn cheaters, they are…

10. Boat Infiltration

Sinking a boat was all well and good, but now, if you do so, you can specifically break into portions (walls) once sunk to get straight to loot instead of going through a door path. Only works this way on an already sunk craft.

Miscellaneous Changes

1. Day Cycle

Since the beginning of time, those in RUST have risen and fallen under the assumption that a day is 45 minutes long, with a 15-minute night cycle in which to get snacks, go relieve themselves, or set up a raid base and hope they don’t hear us.

Beginning in March, the day cycle will (supposedly) increase to 105 minutes in duration, with the night cycle remaining what it was.  Believe it or not (I didn’t), there aren’t actually convars specific to the day/night cycle that you can change, so let’s just roll with it.

2. Unblockable Spawns

Sometimes the natives get a bit weird, and players are forced to constantly spawn on beaches that are, shall we say, terribly ill-fitting to someone naked with no protection. To combat this, in the event that there are no valid spawn points for players, there are now reserved spawn points at both Harbors and Fishing Villages. Huzzah.

What’s Next?

The official 2026 RUST Roadmap hit, giving a glimpse of what is coming in the following months. Among our favorites are the animal additions and the Apartment Complex monument. As with all topics we cover, these subjects are highly subject to change at the whim of the game developer, and we will endeavor to keep the information as current as possible.
