Surface RUST: What’s Coming in July’s Patch

The Common Ground Update, due to release July 2nd, 2026, is shaping up to be one of the stranger, denser, and potentially more divisive patches of the year. Between the long-awaited Clan System, the arrival of the Apartment Complex Monument, and a surprisingly aggressive rework of Softcore Mode, Facepunch appears to be testing several ideas that could significantly change how players organize, survive, trade, and get raided.

At the center of it all is the new Apartment Complex: a safe zone monument with rentable rooms, player-operated shops, combat zones, and just enough weirdness to make everyone wonder exactly how this will play out on live servers. Add in clan management tools, raid-window protections for Softcore, new charity plushies, graphical settings, and a handful of quality-of-life adjustments, and The Common Ground update gives us plenty to unpack. So, let’s get into it.

Apartment Complex Monument

Before you get your hopes up, we couldn’t possibly fit all that encompasses this monument into a preview article. We are going to do as we did with the Deep Sea update: link to specific primary guides and provide a nice overview. There really are a lot of very specific details you’ll want to dig deeper into before you rent yourself a room. Keep in mind that this entire monument is a safe zone, with new combat zones within each room. More on that later.

Monument Features

Shops

Player-owned shops have been a thing for the longest time in the form of Vending Machines. The problem is that these machines can be offline-raided, require a base to attach them to in most cases, and require upkeep to maintain said base. They come with limited curb appeal, and players are often too scared to come all the way out to wherever you call home to make a purchase. On top of all that, they’re usually advertisements for exactly where you keep your valuables.

The new shops are rentable, Scrap-fed structures that are still very much a work in progress. When rented, you will see an NPC inside waiting to sell you something. When not, you will see a Rent Lease Agreement on the front that players may interact with. At the moment, there are 14 total shops available for rent. By default, they require a 100 Scrap upfront cost to open, and 10 Scrap per real-world hour thereafter as your ‘upkeep’.

Right now, a prompt appears when approaching another person’s stall, and you hold down the E key to Open Shop. This brings up the same purchase agreement, with prices doubled, and an offer to let you take it over at 2x the normal rate. It doesn’t currently work.

Each shop is run exactly like a Vending Machine, complete with the same Wheel Menu options, along with Close Shop, Open (to add inventory), and Paint Sign so that you can do some local advertising right on top.

Players with an Apartment Key, purchased at Bandit Camp, can attempt to ‘break-in’ to a shop, though this functionality doesn’t currently work.

Rentable Rooms

Much like shops, rooms are on a daily For Rent model. You begin by approaching the Check-In Desk in the main foyer. Information about the burglary system will be covered in the full guide listed above, as there is considerable nuance to address.

  • Smaller, more compact rooms will have fewer amenities and less storage space, but will cost less
  • Medium rooms will have more of everything
  • Large Penthouse rooms are the biggest and most costly

All room types have a Telephone, a water source, and a comfort-providing toilet. They also come pre-equipped with a Work Bench Level 1. I have attempted to highlight the key differences below.

Playground

There are several playground areas for RUST players to go to and take in that much-needed sun and grass they won’t get outside in the real world. These are mostly safe-zone novelty areas, though some equipment is functional, including swing sets and merry-go-rounds.

Underground Rail Network Entrance

If you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. These are integrated directly into the monument, so building nearby or living here guarantees access.

Clan System & Table

Better late than never, I always say. We were first introduced to the Clan System all the way back in 2023, which was set to be released with the new Nexus System. That all sorta went sideways and got backburnered. Not entirely certain why they are introducing it now without the Nexus portion, but here goes nothing.

The body and mind of the Clan System reside in the invention and incorporation of the Clan Table. This deployable acts essentially as the ‘Tool Cupboard’ of the Clan System, complete with its own unique status marker and range. Would-be clan creators will require access to a clan table in order to name and create their organization, as well as a bunch of other features that we will go over shortly.

For player convenience, these tables have been added to both the Outpost and Bandit Camp monuments to support early-game administration. The location for the Outpost table is in the barbed wire fence area, sharing its location with the Research Table, while the Bandit Camp location is just beside the staircase leading up to the gambling wheel. They are also craftable by players, but must be researched first at a Work Bench Level 1.

Softcore Gamemode Changes

Softcore Mode is undergoing quite a few changes, including, presumably, a switch to a default format that was previously modded-exclusive, without forcing servers to appear as modded.

Gather rate modification, something heralded as a gold standard no-no for a decade, is being adjusted to 2x for nodes, trees, corpse harvesting, and ground collectibles. It isn’t being changed for player-grown crops.

They are incorporating raid windows, during which you cannot be raided outside a set timeframe. Currently, this timeframe is between 6 PM and 9 PM local server time, so it will vary by server location. During this raid window, the default vanilla RUST rules apply. Outside the window, the following changes:

  • Twig and anything that could be melee’d down (eco-raiding) still works and does damage
  • MLRS is disabled
  • Structures aren’t protected until 1 hour after the TC is slapped down
  • Existing structures connected to a TC over an hour old are immune to raid damage, with the exception of

Everything Else

Combat Zones

So yeah, with the Apartment Complex Monument and all its assorted passages being safe zones, guarded by peacekeepers, they added what’s called “Combat Zones.” These are, in short, the rooms themselves.

I imagine it’s because, if and when someone purchases the really expensive Apartment (Master) Key from Bandit Camp, those sitting in their humble abodes may do their best to protect their property. The second you step across the threshold, you’re fair game. These zones are not currently found as a status anywhere else in the game and behave like any zone outside a safe zone.

Running Audio Adjustment

Those who picked up on a slight alteration in running cadence after the player model update, you were heard. Players should now move and have their footsteps audible in a way that is more consistent with how they sounded pre-June.

Skinnable Metal Shopfront

Not to oversell or push skin purchases, but Metal Shop Fronts, of all things, are now skinnable store items.

Experimental Setting: Shadow Caching

Not 100% sure I understand this one yet, despite my tinkering with it. In the developer’s words, it adds contact shadows to improve shadow detail on view models, players, and areas that might otherwise be missed by shadow maps.

Early speculation is that this will improve the appearance of objects affected by shadows, using a fraction of the resources required by traditional shadow mapping.

Player Inventory Model Quality Setting

A simple toggle was added to the Options menu under the Graphics section to reduce the projected definition quality of the player model in your Inventory window. At the moment, the available settings are: low, medium, and high. Low looks more towards the blurry side, while high looks more pixelated. Doesn’t matter either way; your new player model is still ugly.

Charity Plushies

It’s uncertain whether these will be released in July or later, but two of them are remasters of those released last year, both for the UK Cancer Research and Ronald McDonald charities, respectively. There is a new one this year, in the Humane World Pet Charity, which we are all about.

Wallpapers / Sprays

Despite not being able to access this new stuff due to unforeseen staging complications, there will (we assume) be a DLC coming shortly with a metric ton of new wallpapers and spraycan decals.

Gear, Weapons & Loadout Updates

No new gear appears to be added in July, and, as stated before, some of this is speculative about whether it’s for this coming month or later. Here is what we can see in-game.

New Items

What’s Next?

There is still a lot on the horizon for RUST in 2026, and the roadmap continues to deliver a mix of expected features and unexpected detours. The Game Room DLC remains interesting, but the bigger long-term question may be how player-maintained monuments, rentable spaces, and systems like clans reshape the way players interact with the world and each other.

As always, everything covered here is subject to change before release, and we’ll continue updating our guides as Facepunch adjusts, expands, or completely reworks these features.
