Skinning Knife
The Skinning Knife is a mid-game harvesting tool and weapon that is moderately effective for both farming and combat situations in RUST. The primary function of this item is to act as a functional melee weapon and gathering tool.
Additionally, it serves as the exclusive method for acquiring Head Bags. These bags contain severed heads of players or creatures harvested with the Skinning Knife as a show of dominance. If a player’s wearing headgear, it will appear on the harvested head.
How to get a Skinning Knife
The Skinning Knife is a DLC-exclusive blueprint that is available only to those who purchase the Base Decor Pack: Frontier from the RUST Item Store. It will appear in your crafting list after purchasing it.
- It doesn’t appear on the tech tree and cannot be researched
- It doesn’t drop from crates or NPCs as loot
- It does require a Workbench Level 1 to craft
How to use the Skinning Knife
As a tool, you can use a Skinning Knife to harvest animal carcasses for Cloth, Leather, Meat, Bone Fragments, Animal Fat, and Head Bags. Rocks and stone tools harvest creatures and corpses slower and yield less material per cut.
As a weapon, the Skinning Knife is more on par with the Bone Knife than the Combat Knife. The attack rate for all three knives is consistent across the board, so it comes down to damage output, with Skinning Knives ranking right in the middle of the three. It is nearly as efficient at flesh gathering as the Combat Knife.
This is the only item in the game that can yield Head Bags for mounting trophies.
