The Large Backpack is a wearable storage item in RUST that players can equip to increase their carrying capacity. If equipped, a backpack will display on a player’s back and can alert other players that this player may be carrying additional loot.
Basic functionality of a backpack
Once acquired, players need only insert the item into their Backpack slot (the same one as a parachute would use) and then click on the backpack while equipped to open a new sliding inventory feature on the left side of the inventory screen in which to deposit or remove items. As only one such inventory slot exists, players must choose between using a singular backpack or a parachute at any given time.
How to get a large backpack
Unlike the smaller version, large backpacks are not craftable by players. This upgraded version must be found as loot in higher-tier military crates.
Features of a backpack
The large backpack could be considered the upgraded version of the Small Backpack, granting an additional 28 inventory slots to any player using it. If a backpack contains items, it CANNOT be unequipped or swapped out for any item of comparable type, such as a parachute. It must be completely emptied to be removed.
When finding or picking up a backpack from the ground, players will auto-equip it when applicable (unless that slot is already in use).
What happens to a backpack when a player dies?
At the time of a player’s unfortunate death, any player with an equipped backpack will fall to the ground right beside their normal corpse. Those that find the player’s backpack may hold ‘E’ to immediately pick up and equip it if not already wearing one (complete with contents), or simply loot the contents individually by pressing ‘E’ once as you would a normal corpse and taking what they’d like.
If the player had an equipped backpack that was empty at the time of death, it would still drop to the ground as an empty lootable receptacle. It may be picked up by facing it and holding ‘E.’
Backpack types will despawn over time at varying rates, depending on the contents, up to a max of 2 hours. Backpacks cannot be destroyed through normal means once on the ground.
