Key Lock
The Key Lock is a multipurpose tool located under the construction tab in the F1
Console, and available to all players as a default blueprint upon loading RUST.
The key lock offers a means of locking assorted doors and storage containers for players intending to keep their valuables safe. To access the key locks array of functions, it must first be placed on an entity such as a Garage Door or Tool Cupboard.
A distinct blue outline of the lock itself will appear on any entity you intend to lock once you have placed the code lock on your hotbar and chosen the appropriate numerical slot. This is especially important when placing on double doors near rockfaces or cave walls, as placing the lock incorrectly will make that door unlockable and unremovable without admin intervention (it places on one side or the other, and if a rock covers that side, you can’t see it). Once placed, players may look directly at the key lock and hold E, displaying a scroll wheel of assorted options.
For doors, the options by default (it starts locked now) are Close Door or Unlock (this door). Should you choose to unlock, the options change to Remove Lock, Close Door, Lock, or Create a Key (at the cost of 25 Wood). Storage boxes with key locks added operate the exact same way, with slight variations to the interface similar to doors but with “Close” simply displaying as “Open.”
Locked entities are indicated by a small red box, while unlocked are indicated by small green boxes.
Unlike the Code Lock, the key lock is only accessible to the player that originally placed and locked it (no key required) or persons having a Door Key in their inventory crafted directly from that lock. When either of these circumstances is met, players will be allowed access to that door or storage container until the lock itself is removed, or the door or box is destroyed completely.
It is the universal understanding in RUST among players and administrators alike that you are responsible for the security of your property, and making keys and throwing them about or dying with them will not get you your possessions back in the event that someone finds them.
