The Hammer is a player-craftable construction tool in RUST that is available as a default blueprint. Every upgraded structure created by a player has had a hammer used in the process. The hammer is one of the most functional multi-tools available in-game.
In addition to being the end-all foundation and building upgrade tool (when privilege is granted), hammers also serve several other key game functions.
Players may use the hammer to demolish a structure within 10 minutes of placing it. Within 10 minutes of upgrading a structure (assuming the 10-minute build window has passed), players can also use the hammer to rotate walls.
Hammers are also responsible for allowing players to pick up deployables they might want to remove or relocate. Items such as Furnaces and Sleeping Bags can be returned to player inventories so long as proper building privileges are established.
Hammers can check for structural stability. While this might not seem like the most exciting feature, they are absolutely clutch for finding hidden base bunkers. If you scan a series of foundations, each at 100% stability, and suddenly notice a triangle ‘foundation’ at 13% stability, chances are you’ve discovered a stability bunker. Hammers are also one of the best ways to find and uncover any hidden Small Stashes buried in the ground (the other being by placing a raised thatch foundation over them).
Finally, hammers are required to repair structures that are damaged by raiding or other means. When the player is holding appropriate repairing materials in their inventory, using the hammer to hit an entity or structure will cause materials to be absorbed and health to be restored. A small informational box will appear if materials aren’t present, citing the missing material for repair.
