Gears are a high-demand component in RUST. Players will need to find gears to craft any base component with moving parts.
You will need many gears across a wipe cycle, usually more than you would find incidentally throughout a wipe.
If you want to know more about getting gears, checkout out our guide on How To Find Gears.
Players must adopt a tactic to accompany running the roads and points of interest to find enough gears to secure their base correctly.
Their primary function is in Garage Doors. With substantially more health than Sheet Metal Doors, garage doors increase a base’s estimated Rocket raid count substantially.
Gears are also required for the step up to Armored Doors and a lot of quality of life base improvements.
Gears have a decent drop rate from their standard containers. However, you will often need a few more than you find.
To get some extra gears, you can recycle many unnecessary components into gears.
While you can simply purchase gears from the Outpost, you can also buy the Chainsaw at the Outpost and recycle the chainsaw instead. Along with your gears, you’ll also receive some High-Quality Metal and several Metal Blades.
If you have a Work Bench Level 3, you can also learn the Blueprint for gears. However, crafting a gear will still cost 100 Scrap and 25 Metal Fragments. Thus, making the chainsaw recycling the best scrap resource to gear ratio purchase currently available.
