Frog Boots as we know them today were a promotional craftable item given to anyone that participated in RUST Early Access, going live with the February 8th Patch all the way back in 2018. They are no longer obtainable unless you were gifted the item at that time.
Costing just 1 Tarp and 1 second to craft, what these boots lack is the protection they more than make up for in fashion. Frog boots do contribute minimal cold and radiation protection, but being able to craft them in the game is more of a status symbol than anything else.
The only way to acquire this item in-game aside from administrative F1 Console spawning is to own the Steam item and craft it.
Its unique appearance makes the wearer resemble a person with a frog on one foot and a standard black wading-style boot on the other.
One notable mention from early sound developer Alex Rehberg is the sound that these boots make and the intention behind them. Helk, a game developer with Facepunch, wanted them to sound like they were saying “lol” and “kek” as players ran.
Mr. Rehberg described this undertaking as:
“the hardest sound design thing I’ve ever done.”
