Fridge

Overview

The Fridge is a player-deployable storage container in RUST, explicitly designed for preserving food items and seeds. A larger version of the Mini Fridge, it is commonly found in farming bases, kitchens, and community compounds. It functions similarly to a real refrigerator, keeping perishable goods fresh when powered.

As of the October 2025 update, the Fridge now requires 5 units of electrical power to remain active. When powered, it completely halts spoilage timers for both raw and cooked meats, providing players with a reliable method of long-term food storage.

How to Acquire the Fridge

  • Crafting: Can be crafted once the blueprint has been researched.
  • Loot Sources: Occasionally found in Elite Crates, Military Tunnels, and high-tier monument loot.
  • Research: Obtainable through the Research Table for 15 Scrap.
  • Trading: Commonly sold by players or vending machines in mid- to late-game economies.
  • Workbench Requirement: Level 2 or higher.

To Craft the Fridge

  1. Ensure you have 75 Metal Fragments in your inventory
  2. Stand near a Workbench Level 2 or greater
  3. Press the Tab button in-game to open the crafting menu
  4. Type “Fridge” in the search bar
  5. Click on its icon, then click the “Craft” button

Using the Fridge

The Fridge acts as a 48-slot storage container limited to food items, seeds, and perishables.

  • Deployment
    • Can be deployed on any flat surface (floors, foundations, or shelves).
    • Requires building privilege within the Tool Cupboard range.
    • It can be placed indoors or outdoors.
    • Rotate the placement orientation using the R key before deploying.
    • Can be locked with a Code Lock or Key Lock for added security.
  • Durability
    • 200 Hit Points
    • Vulnerable to melee, bullets, and explosives
    • Subject to standard deployable decay timers when left outside of the Tool Cupboard range.
  • Power Requirement
    • Requires 5 Power from RUST’s electrical system to operate.
    • Must be connected to a powered circuit.
    • When power is interrupted, the Fridge stops preserving food, and spoilage timers resume.

Food Preservation

When powered, the Fridge halts all spoilage timers for raw and cooked meats, preventing them from spoiling. Any raw or cooked meat type left in the open without refrigeration will eventually turn into its spoiled counterpart:

Spoiled food cannot be salvaged once it has spoiled. It will still provide a fraction of the calories it once did, but now with added poison that will damage or kill a player over time. Most meats can still be used as fish bait, though.

Spoilage Timers

Every listed meat type is created with a spoilage timer that starts when it enters a box, player inventory, or other lootable container.

  • Raw Meat: 6-hour default timer.
  • Cooked Meat: 24-hour default timer.
  • Powered Fridge: Timer paused entirely while powered.
  • Unpowered or Inventory Storage: Timer resumes until reaching zero, at which point the item spoils.

These timers are visible when inspecting food items in your inventory. Spoiled food retains limited uses (e.g., fish bait) but poses a health risk when consumed.

Those with access to a Cooking Workbench may also craft their Pies, utilizing all of the various meats listed above. For more information on Pies and Bread Loaves, check out our complete Advanced Cooking Guide.

Strategic Value

The Fridge provides both practical and logistical advantages for survival-oriented and farming players:

  • Food Preservation: Essential for long-term sustainability in larger bases or roleplay servers.
  • Farming Synergy: Pairs well with farms and cooking setups to store harvests, berries, and crafted meals.
  • PvE Survival: Prevents food waste and supports healing through cooked meals.
  • Power Integration: Enhances base management by encouraging the use of generators, solar panels, or batteries.
  • Base Aesthetics: A decorative touch for kitchens and dining areas, enhancing immersion.
