Explosive 5.56 Rifle Ammo is one of the four types of 5.56 ammo available in Rust. Many consider it the most versatile raiding tool used by solos and teams with access to a tier 3 workbench (see raiding tutorial). Often used in conjunction with Rockets and Timed Explosive Charges to reduce resource use redundancy, ‘explo ammo’ is often viewed as the minimum blueprint requirement to raid more than small starter bases.
Explosive 5.56 ammo causes repairable damage to the weapon it is fired from since it fires at a much greater rate than traditional bullets of similar type. In addition to this, it also has a considerable drop when fired across greater distances. It produces a louder sound that can be heard from roughly 3 times the distance of a regular 5.56 bullet, even while silenced.
You can find Explosive 5.56 rifle ammo in many types of crates or as loot from particular NPC’s at higher tier monuments. At the same time, there are no in-game vendors in RUST that stock Explosive 5.56 rifle ammo, and players will often sell this ammunition from their Vending Machine shops. Players have a special preference for this type over others due to its relatively cheap crafting cost to other explosive types.
Explosive 5.56 rifle ammo roughly recycles into half of its crafting cost. Still, it is probably the least likely ammunition in-game ever to be put into a recycler due to the loot potential of using it in base raids. While it can be used in Auto Turrets for base defense, this practice is highly doubtful due to the explosive nature of the ammo and the likelihood that it could easily be mobilized against the base that it is defending.
You can place over 1500 rounds in auto turret storage, matching the rate of fire of the gun equipped to the auto turret.
All 5.56 rifle ammo types can fire through most wooden walls and even trees. However, many temporary deployable items can block 5.56 rifle ammo.
