Basic Blueprint Fragment

Overview

The Basic Blueprint Fragment is a new progression item introduced in RUST’s October 2025 update. It acts as a gatekeeper resource for the creation of Workbench Level 2, slowing the pace of early wipe advancement and requiring players to engage with monument puzzles and loot systems before reaching mid-game equipment.

Basic Blueprint Fragments are designed to balance progression, much like the Advanced Blueprint Fragment does for Workbench Level 3. They ensure that players cannot simply Scrap farm their way through the tech tree without stepping into contested PvE and PvP environments.

How to Acquire Basic Blueprint Fragments

Basic Blueprint Fragments cannot be crafted directly and must be obtained through specific loot sources or recycling:

  • Green Keycard Puzzle Rooms: Found beside the Blue & Red Keycard desk, yielding 1 fragment per pickup.
  • Blue Keycard Puzzle Rooms: Same desk placement as Green rooms, yielding 2 fragments per pickup.
  • Monuments: They can be found at all medium to large monuments.
  • Supply Drops: A developer commit suggested a 100% drop chance from Supply Drops, though this has not yet appeared on the Staging Branch.
  • Loot Crates: Can drop from Military Crates and Large Underwater Crates.
  • Roadways: Can drop from Junkpile Scientists.
  • Metal Detector: Can be found along roadsides using a Metal Detector.
  • Recycling: Recycling a Workbench Level 2 yields Basic Blueprint Fragments, offering a partial refund for downgrading progression.
  • Upgrading Path: 20 Basic Blueprint Fragments may be combined to create 1 Advanced Blueprint Fragment.

⚠️ Note: Advanced Fragments cannot currently be recycled back into Basic Fragments, despite the upgrade path implication.

Crafting & Usage

  • Primary Use: Required in the crafting of Workbench Level 2.
  • Quantity Needed: 5 Basic Blueprint Fragments per Workbench Level 2.
  • Crafting Availability: Cannot be crafted; must be looted or recycled.
  • Upgrade Path: 20 Basics → 1 Advanced Fragment.

Strategic Value

The Basic Blueprint Fragment is a pivotal choke point in RUST’s progression system:

  • Early Wipe Balance: Prevents players from rushing Workbench Level 2 immediately through Scrap alone, keeping early wipe combat on more even ground.
  • Encourages Monument Runs: Directly ties keycard puzzles into the core progression loop, pushing players into contested areas from the first hours of a wipe.
  • Player Economy: Adds a new tradable commodity. On community servers, fragments may emerge as currency alongside Scrap in the early wipe.
  • Risk vs. Reward: Players seeking fragments must expose themselves to PvP hotspots, such as Blue Puzzle Rooms or Supply Drop zones, creating tension and contested fights.
  • Recycling Loophole: Recycling a Workbench Level 2 offers a fallback for players who overshoot progression or mismanage resources.

Updates & History

  • Added in the October 2025 update.
