How to use RUST Gestures with Commands

The RUST Gesture command allows players the ability to communicate in-game, using non-verbal movements, known as gestures. Many online games, mainly MMOs (massively multiplayer online), have implemented gestures, such as thumbs up and down that has become commonly known to gamers.

Gestures were originally introduced into RUST with the Chippy Arcade Update on 6/21/2019. This initial batch of gestures included 7 gesture commands with associated character animations. An additional collection of gestures were again introduced with the April 2021 Gestures Update. This update afforded players the added benefit of a first-person visual of their gesture, rather than just the shadow of their gesture.

The upgraded system includes the new Gesture Wheel, which can be brought up by pressing and holding ‘B’, then selecting the desired gesture from the pie wheel. The development team’s goal for the upgrade was to reduce the risk involved when using gestures during high-intensity gameplay, due to the fact that the gesture would unequip the player’s weapon. Now, gestures will be done with the opposite hand as the player’s weapon; right or left depending on your setting. Additionally, the system is fitted with the functionality to extend the feature with looping and third person gestures.

Each gesture can be used by typing the specific gesture’s command into the F1 console. Alternatively, gestures can be bound to a key. Every time the key bind is used, it will execute the associated gesture command. For example, enter the following into the F1 console to bind the wave command to the m key.

bind m “gesture wave”

To bind additional gestures, you will need to use other keys.

Who can use the RUST Gesture Command

All RUST players on vanilla servers can issue the gesture commands, unlike many of the administrator & moderator only commands.
