How to use the RUST Gesture Commands
RUST gesture commands allow players to communicate nonverbally in-game through character movements. Many online games, especially MMOs (massively multiplayer online games), feature gestures and emotes like thumbs up and down, widely known among gamers.
Emotes were first introduced in RUST with the Chippy Arcade Update on 6/21/2019, initially bringing seven animations. Later, additional animations were added in the April 2021 Gestures Update, in which players gained the added benefit of a first-person view when performing these animations rather than just seeing their shadows.
The latest addition to RUST gestures was made in the November 2024 Armed & Animated Update, which added eight unique gestures through a paid-for DLC, including one minigame, “Rock Paper Scissors.” Along with this update, Facepunch introduced the ability to customize the wheel to support the growing number of gestures, adding support for multiple wheels, which can be customized in the options menu.
In RUST, there is a gesture wheel, which players can access by pressing and holding the B key, allowing players to select animations from a pie wheel interface. If you have the DLC, you can access the second wheel using the E and Q keys when the wheel is open. The development team aimed to reduce the risk of unequipping weapons during intense moments by having the character use the opposite hand for these movements, depending on the player’s settings. The system now also includes features for looping and third-person animations.
Each gesture can be activated by typing a specific command in the F1 console. Alternatively, players can bind animations to a specific keyboard key, so pressing that key will trigger the associated emote command. For instance, you can bind the wave animation to the M key by entering this into the console: bind m "gesture wave"
Who can use the RUST Gesture Command
All RUST players on vanilla servers can use these gesture and emote commands, unlike the restricted commands available only to administrators or moderators.
How to use RUST Gesture Commands
You must first be actively connected to a RUST server to use the gesture commands. Your character must also be awake, not lying, sleeping, sitting, or swimming.

After the gesture command is entered into the console, the character immediately initiates the gesture. The console does not display a success message.
Wave
