Surface RUST: What’s Coming in April’s Patch

After months of boats, Deep Sea chaos, and scientists that hit like they’ve got something to prove, RUST’s April update looks a bit different. This patch shifts away from the big naval spectacle and toward a collection of smaller changes, quality-of-life improvements, and a few genuinely useful additions that should land well with builders, farmers, electricians, and server admins alike.

From armored ladder hatches and the long-awaited Water Wheel to console improvements, blueprint streamlining, and the ability to finally mute obnoxious world event notifications, April’s patch may not be the loudest update in recent memory, but it could end up being one of the more practical.

Here’s everything we’ve spotted so far.

Armored Ladder Hatches

Possibly one of the most requested duos of items is being added to the game: the Armored Square and Triangle Ladder Hatches. Not much to the imagination here, really; they do exactly what the standard Ladder Hatch counterparts do, except better.

What standard Ladder Hatches are to Sheet Metal Doors, Armored Ladder Hatches are to Armored Doors.  The crafting cost is slightly different, but they’re statistically the exact same as the single or Armored Double Door.

Light Source Radial Toggle

If you’ve ever worn Night Vision Goggles simultaneously with a Weapon Flashlight, you know the pain of blinding oneself at the most inopportune time. To combat this, a keybind feature was implemented that allows you (once bound) to select which light source you’d like to activate instead of instantly turning yourself into a non-seeing foglight.

Water Wheel

Hydropower has been on players’ and devs’ minds for years, and now it’s a reality. Players can learn the Water Wheel as a very early-stage blueprint on the Engineering Workbench and turn the rivers beside their farm into a small hydroelectric plant. More on this item further down in the article.

F1 Console Overhaul

Most RUST players will be indifferent to this one, but server owners and admins, pay attention. There was a full overhaul of the F1 console menu, and it’s sorta awesome. This expansive new UI allows scrolling through items, offers improved visuals, includes a full command/convar menu with explanations, and so much more. Be sure to play with it on release.

Overfishing and Improved Deep Sea Fishing

Fishing the same spot repeatedly will now become less effective over time. Players who stay in one location too long will gradually overfish the area, causing their catches to decline until they start pulling up mostly junk instead of useful fish. We believe this is player-specific.

Right now, the overfishing system appears to use a default radius value of 16, though it is not yet clear what in-game measurement that represents. The current setup also seems to allow around 25 successful catches before the penalty begins, while the area appears to recover after 30, which likely means 30 minutes. These values may still be adjusted before the update goes live.

To balance that out, fishing in the Deep Sea area will become more rewarding, with better fish and larger quantities available during the event.

Colorful Buttons

The Button is receiving some love, with the addition of a color selection wheel menu when holding the E key while looking at one with building privilege. Players may change it from its default red to:

  • White
  • Blue
  • Orange
  • Grey
  • Green
  • Light Blue
  • Yellow
  • Pink
  • Purple

Chainsaw Buff

To bring them more in line with the effectiveness of their mining counterpart, players will no longer need to play the X chopping game while using a Chainsaw in order to maximize efficiency. This makes chopping wood at night much more effective.

Ripedness’er

Tired farmers, rejoice: you can now go to bed without worrying so much about your plants (again). The duration of the Ripe state has been increased to a full 24 hours, meaning that as long as you come back within a day of planting, they should be good to go.

World Event Disabling

Some have commented that the new Deep Sea notification noise is a bit loud. Others have stated that they’d prefer it to just pop up in one of the large, red-boxed toast notifications, as Oil Rigs used to. Well, now you can have either, or both, with a new settings feature.

Med Syringe & Salvaged Axe Visual Changes

The Medical Syringe and Salvaged Axe have both received a visual overhaul in this patch, with the latter also gaining the ability to be skinned.  I’m sure that there might even be one or two options on the in-game item store when the patch goes live.

Multi-Blueprint Unlock

Probably my personal favorite change of April: players can now instantly learn the entire tree of any workbench, provided they have Scrap and select the path they want to take, where applicable. It pops off with the nicest animation and sounds, and is quite satisfying to watch.

Easter Hunt Shininess

Finally, we have a few Easter-specific changes to go over. Well, really only one. The old egg visuals are being replaced with newer, brighter, higher-definition eggs that stand out much more than before.  We have included some pics.

Gear, Weapons & Loadout Updates

Not too many additions this wipe, but we will cover what we have confirmed so far.  This should be a full accounting of new items.

New Items Being Introduced

ItemItem DescriptionNotes
Armored Ladder Hatch“An armored hatch that opens and changes into a ladder.”Upgraded, stronger variety of the traditional ladder hatch, square in shape. Workbench Level 3. Learning either through a research bench still teaches you the other, as is true with the original ladder hatches.
Armored Triangle Ladder Hatch“A triangular armored hatch that opens and changes into a ladder.”Upgraded, stronger variety of the traditional ladder hatch, triangular in shape. Workbench Level 3. Learning either through a research bench still teaches you the other, as is true with the original ladder hatches.
Bunny Costume“An inflatable bunny costume. Acting as a replacement for wooden pants, you can equip this item to look as silly as possible.”The item description really sorta nails this one. Same stats as its predecessor, Horse and Chicken Costumes, likely a purchasable skin on the marketplace the week of Easter.  Comes in Boom pants, Blue pants, and Grey pants.
Rustige Egg – Amethyst“A beautiful hand crafted amethyst and gold egg, with a miniature excavator scene contained inside.”A continuation of the Rustige egg set they put out each year. Has a unique scene and music box feature when opened.
Water Wheel“Converts kinetic energy harvested from flowing water into electricity.”A new electricity-producing implement that may work naturally by placing it in a river, or by mounting it and running to generate energy. Yes, it currently works in caves.

What’s Next?

Looking past April, the official 2026 roadmap gives players an early peek at what Facepunch is cooking next. Of the ideas shown so far, the animal additions and the Apartment Complex monument stand out as two of the more interesting, both with the potential to shake up exploration, encounters, and day-to-day survival in meaningful ways.

Of course, this is RUST, and anything on a roadmap can be delayed, reworked, or quietly launched wearing a fake mustache. We’ll continue to follow the changes as they develop and update our coverage as more concrete details emerge.
