Patrol Helicopter Aggression in RUST

Why Does the Patrol Helicopter Attack You in RUST?

The Patrol Helicopter is one of RUST’s most challenging PvE encounters, capable of dropping some of the best end-game loot in the game. Regardless of your server’s rules or settings, you’ll likely run into it, either by choice or by accident, when you unknowingly trigger its aggression.

For years, players have traded rumors and theories about what makes the Patrol Heli attack, on forums, in-game chat, and across Discord communities. Today, we’re putting that community wisdom to the test to separate myth from fact and show what actually keeps you safe (or gets you killed).

Attack Triggers Overview

Four main factors determine when the Patrol Helicopter becomes hostile. We’ll break down each in more detail below.

  • Clothing Count: Number of equipped clothing items, armor pieces, swimming gear, or backpacks
  • Hotbar Contents: Types of weapons, tools, or equipables in your hotbar
  • Combat Initialization: Whether you’ve hit the helicopter with any attack
  • Line of Sight: Whether the Patrol Helicopter can see you

Before we continue, if you’d like information on how to destroy the Patrol Helicopter, or if you are a RUST Admin and want to learn about its server settings (convars), you may find those resources below, respectively:

What Clothes and Gear Trigger the Patrol Helicopter?

The clothing rule is simpler than most think. The Patrol Helicopter hates players wearing more than two pieces of clothing or gear. Period. Everything else is secondary.

You can only safely wear two total equipped items (clothing, armor, backpacks, parachutes, or scuba gear) while in range of the Patrol Helicopter. Anything beyond that will make it hostile.

Combat Initiation & Line of Sight Explained

Combat Initiation happens when you hit the Patrol Helicopter, whether it’s a lucky bow shot or a long-range rifle round. Once line of sight is established and you’ve triggered the attack mechanism, the Patrol Helicopter will become hostile. When it sees you and becomes hostile, running inside won’t save you. It’ll fire rockets until your base (and day) are ruined.

However, if the Patrol Helicopter can’t see you when it passes by, for example, you’re indoors, behind a wall, or underground in a cave, you’re safe. You can also “strip down” your equipment and hotbar into your inventory before line of sight occurs.

With the current AI logic, the helicopter may de-aggro after approximately 30 seconds if you break line of sight and are no longer triggering its aggro. However, if you hit it, expect it to stick around for its full 30-minute patrol cycle.

For testing purposes, we found you can hide in a fully enclosed twig triangle base (three walls, a floor, and a roof) if it’s built before the helicopter sees you. Build it after, and you’re toast.

Final Thoughts: Living With the Patrol Helicopter

This one has been on our minds for a long time, as it is the most frequent topic of conversation that new players initiate in chat. Most RUST players have some idea of how to protect themselves, but even a little information, or more importantly, inaccurate information, can be very dangerous.

As always, we’ll keep this guide up to date as the game evolves. If we’ve missed something, let us know on the Corrosion Hour Discord. Be good to each other out there, survivors.
