What is the Stone Pickaxe, and what’s it used for?
So, you’ve been using stone tools for a while in Green Hell, and now you’re ready to start forging your own metal. Unless you have a bunch of empty cans lying around, you’ll need a way to mine those iron veins lining the cave walls. You need a Stone Pickaxe.
This guide will walk you through how to craft a Stone Pickaxe and offer some tips on how it can be used.
How to craft a Stone Pickaxe

Stone Pickaxes are multi-functional tools capable of helping you perform several different tasks. Before you can craft this useful item, though, make sure you know where to find its component resources.
First, gather the following components:
- 1 Stick
- 1 Rope
- 1 Stone Blade
Sticks can be found on the ground around the rainforest, collected by cutting down trees, or harvested from Long Sticks and Logs. Rope can be gathered by collecting Liana vines hanging from large trees. Stone Blades are primitive tools created by combining two rocks.
Once you’ve collected the proper components, craft the Stone Pickaxe by:
- Opening the radial menu (by holding the
C
key) - Select crafting from the options
- Drag the stick, rope, and stone blade to the crafting rock from the backpack
- Press the craft button above the crafting rock
Note: The crafting menu can also be opened from the inventory sidebar or by holding the alt-select button (default RMB
) over one of the ingredients and pressing craft.
How to equip a Stone Pickaxe

The Stone Pickaxe can be found in the tools tab of the inventory and occupies one of the four standard tool slots (numbered 1-4). It can be equipped at any time by pressing the number key corresponding to the slot this tool occupies.
Tips and tricks for using the Stone Pickaxe

The primary use of the Stone Pickaxe is harvesting iron ore from veins. These ore deposits can sometimes be found lining the walls of caves and can be identified by their distinct orange coloration. These ore veins can only be harvested using a pickaxe. Once mined, this ore can be smelted at a mud forge for use in crafting metal tools.
While not as effective as a proper axe, the pickaxe can be used to split wood and chop down trees. Since it is technically a member of the “axe” family, it can also be used to destroy structures and slash through the underbrush.
Stone Pickaxes can be used for combat if necessary, but we don’t recommend it. Dealing only slightly more damage than a Stone Axe, we suggest using them as a throwing weapon rather than for melee combat, as it deals much more damage if you can strike an enemy in the head.
