What is the Bone Spear, and what’s it used for?
Extremely deadly and with excellent reach, Green Hell’s Bone Spear is a great choice for early to mid-game combat and hunting. Constructed from a sharpened bone tied to the end of a wooden haft, this spear was designed with combat in mind.
This guide will walk you through how to craft a Bone Spear and offer some tips on how it can be used.
How to craft a Bone Spear in Green Hell

As powerful as this weapon is, it can be crafted with just a few materials, most of which can be located easily and early on in the game.
Crafting a Bone Spear will require the following components:
- 1 Long Stick
- 1 Rope
- 1 Bone
Long Sticks can be collected by chopping down trees with a tool such as the Stone Axe or Stone Blade. Rope can be gathered by collecting Liana vines hanging from large trees. Bones can be collected from rotting carcasses or harvested from medium animals, large animals, or humans.
Once you’ve collected the proper components, craft the Bone Spear by:
- Opening the radial menu (by holding the
C
key) - Select crafting from the options
- Drag the bone, rope, and long stick to the crafting rock from the backpack or environment
- Press the craft button above the crafting rock
Note: The crafting menu can also be opened from the inventory sidebar or by holding the alt-select button (default RMB
) over one of the ingredients and pressing craft.
How to equip the Bone Spear

The Bone Spear can be found in the tools tab of the inventory and occupies one of the four standard tool slots (numbered 1-4). It can be equipped at any time by pressing the number key corresponding to the slot this tool occupies.
Tips and tricks for using the Bone Spear

Bone Spears are best used for hunting, fishing, and combat. This particular spear variant allows for more damage output than a Weak Spear or Stone Spear.
Each kind of spear has a different reach for its attacks based on its construction. The Bone Spear is tied for the second-longest reach in the game with the Metal Spear and is outranked only by the Stone Spear.
Bone Spears are an excellent choice for melee combat. Use this weapon’s impressive reach to keep enemies at bay and punish those who get too close. Dodging backward can help you keep your distance and force enemies back into the reach of your spear.
Bone Spears can also be thrown as projectiles. This not only makes hunting with them easier but also make them viable options for ranged combat. A thrown spear that strikes a target in the head will often kill them in a single hit. Remember that throwing spears still relies on your Spears skill rather than your Throwing skill.
Holding down the attack button with a spear equipped will allow you to perform a power attack. Power attacks deal more damage based on how long they have been charged.
Final thoughts on the Bone Spear
A solid melee and ranged weapon that can be crafted near the start of the game, the Bone Spear stands tall among other members of its category. Though simple and a bit awkward-looking, Creepy Jar ensured this wasn’t a weapon players would take lightly.
